I’m closer to God now – Vast of Bracket

Vast, one half of the Bracket music group, recently returned to Nigeria after undergoing treatment for blood cancer in the UK.

See excerpts from his interview with PM news below:

Vast, you’re welcome back to Nigeria after the blood cancer ailment that almost claimed your life. How did it happen?
I was feeling very sick, but couldn’t go for extensive treatment on time because had many shows and we had been paid up front. So I had to play all the shows, decided to round it off in 2012, so that my treatment can begin in 2013. Even from January, 2013, we still had concerts to play. We had to go to Australia, but then, I was feeling very sick. My family told me not to worry after the gigs, I will go for treatment. So, I was going to a hospital in Nigeria. But they couldn’t diagnose what was wrong with me. After some months, the dermatologist advised me travel abroad.

We first applied for normal UK visa but it was difficult. But luckily for us, we saw that they had priority visa. If you have travelled to America, Asian countries or to Australia, you can apply for priority visa, so we applied and within three to four days the visa came out and we went to UK. Luckily for us, we met a friend who said his brother is a doctor. He spoke with his brother and his brother referred us to a dermatologist there who gave us an appointment. They ran another test on me, and within two days, the result came out. That was when I was diagnosed of blood cancer, and the treatment began immediately. It was very difficult. I thought I would lose all the blood in my body but glory be to God. The first chemotherapy was very difficult because I started having problem due to loss of blood, so I had to go to the hospital again and I had blood transfusion.
During this period, what was on your mind?
I was praying. I didn’t have any hope, so I was just praying to God and I said I don’t know where these things will end. I don’t know what’s going to happen, so after the second treatment, I started feeling better. I started exercising, because the doctor said, at least you don’t have to stay and wait for the medical to work on its own, you have to exercise. It was shortly after the third chemotherapy that I was getting back to human being because I was dead already.
What did the doctor say was the cause of the blood cancer?
I asked the doctor, but he said ‘let’s leave the cause for now’. He said it’s just like when two black people make love and when the baby came out, it’s an albino. If such people ask you why they are delivered of albino, you won’t know how to explain. I felt relieved when he said this.
What gave you courage during this tough period?
When I was in the hospital, my partner was doing a very good job. He will call a producer, they will make a beat and send it to me. First of all, what kept me going was God because I saw myself dying but we got the finance to deal with the situation, which was the work of God. Besides, we were lucky to quickly meet a doctor who specialises in cancer and lungs treatment. Part of what gave me courage was my family, my partner, my C.E.O, and my manager. They were there for me, all of them travelled with me and made sure I did what I was supposed to do. They made sure I drank my juice, they made sure I took my medication, this is the second courage. When my hospital picture leaked, I was stronger because my fans prayed for me. Someone was even saying if this guy dies, I’m going to die, and I was like ‘oh my God, I have to survive.’ Also, the media encouraged me.
What lessons have you learnt from this?
First of all, I learnt that life is very precious. No matter what you do, no matter where ever you are, don’t look down on anybody because you don’t know who will help you tomorrow. Another thing is that you don’t have to be scared of death; live your normal life. At a point, I was very scared, that was when the sickness was weighing me down, but when I started getting all this courage, I stood up, I started exercising and I wasn’t scared anymore.
How did the symptoms start?
I was having chest pain from time to time. So we went to the doctor who gave me some drugs, but after some time, the pain will return. It got so bad in October last year –that was when I really fell sick. All the hospitals I visited in Nigeria tried their best, but I think it wasn’t enough because after three months, they could not diagnose anything. Some doctors will say they suspect tuberculosis, this one will tell us that I think I suspect growth. But when we got to London, I did a test, and within two days, the result came out showed that I had blood cancer.
Here in Nigeria, cancer patients are treated like animals because they lack the funds for treatment. To get cancer drug is very difficult and very costly. One chemotherapy costs up to N1.4 million, and you are going to have eight circles, so for them in Nigeria, before they even give you the treatment, you have to prove that you will be able to pay, so if you are not able to pay, they will just keep you in the hospital.
How do you think the situation can be improved in Nigeria?
That is why we have made up our minds to float a Cancer Foundation. We have spoken to some people about the foundation and they like the idea. At least every year, we should treat like 10 cancer patients. If we work on it and every Nigerian contributes and makes it work, before you know it, we can have a cancer free Nigeria. It is very possible. If you set up a cancer centre, there is a machine that once the machine scans you, it will detect it earlier. You can even kill it with normal drugs or antibiotics. Some people say cancer is a big man sickness, but now, it’s like malaria because you don’t know what causes it. Some people were asking if I smoke, but the truth is that I don’t. In the London hospital, smoking was the least thing that caused many people’s cancer.
If you have the life, spend it well, express your life and have fun. Well, I will say that whatever you believe in, just pray to that thing; if you believe in God, if you believe in whatsoever, if you believe in Allah, make sure you pray. In the past, I didn’t take prayers seriously, but now I’m a serious person. If you will have to stay with me, you will have to pray with me at least three times a day. It’s not my fault my brother, I just have to. Before, I just pray, but now I can say I have a conversation with God because of this. I’m sorry, I don’t use to do it before but now this thing has taught me to be stronger and living some kind of life which I cannot abandon.
Is there anything the doctors said you can’t do for now?
I had blood cancer, and you know I had a lot of chemotherapy; it’s always six but I had eight, that means I have plenty of things in my stomach now, so even if I get married now, I was told to use protection because if you make a baby, it might not be a complete baby. This is because of the medications. I still have to be protected for the next five months. I have to be careful of where I go to avoid contracting anything because the immune system is low for now. The doctors also said I should make sure I eat fresh food, fresh fruit, fresh fish, because the system needs something fresh, so I should avoid eating food that has been left for two days.

Shareholders fight Jay Jay Okocha & wife over sports company

jay jay and wife

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has fixed 18 September to decide either to relist or not Jay-Jay Okocha Group West Africa Limited in a petition filed against the former captain of the Super Eagles, Okocha Austin Azuka a.k.a Jay-Jay Okocha and his wife Nkechi Okocha.

Also joined as co-defendant is a limited liability company; Jay-Jay Okocha Group West Africa Limited, jointly formed by the former footballer and six other shareholders namely; Friday Nwankero-Kuja, Ijeoma Kuja, Nwankwo-Kuja, James Chinedu, Nwankwo Kuja Daniel Chukwudi, Nwankwo Kuja Mary Chioma.
Two other companies Africa Shelter Sports Consultant Limited, Friday Nwankwo and Sons Limited are also petitioners in the impending legal hostility.
In an affidavit sworn to by a Director and shareholder of Jay-Jay Okocha Group West Africa Limited, Friday Nwankwo Kuja, and filed before the Court by a Lagos Lawyer, Barrister Caleb Rotimi Oyekola, the petitioners who claimed to be shareholders of the company which was incorporated to arrange, organise, finance  and present sporting events, alleged that Okocha and his wife, Nkechi, who are the Chairman and Managing Directors of the company respectively are conducting the affairs of the company in an illegal and oppressive manner.
Mr. Kuja alleged further that at the formative stage of the company located at 46, Saka Tinubu Street, Victoria Island, he expended a total sum of N63m, while he was performing his duties as the Executive Director in the affairs of the company diligently and productively.
He said he and other shareholders have now been sidelined.
However, when he started clamoring for the auditing of the company’s account in line with the provisions of the Company and Allied Matters Act to ascertain if the company was making profit and to also enable the company to file its annual returns to the Corporate Affairs Commission, the respondents decided to illegally and unlawfully ease him out of his position as a Director contrary to the provision of the Company and Allied Matters Act.
Consequently, the respondents without any valid resolution of the company conspired together to have his properties thrown out of his office without any authorisation from the Board of Directors whereas himself and other petitioners mentioned earlier are the majority shareholders of the company.
Thereafter all efforts to have General Meeting of the company as well as have the account of the company audited and preparation of the general statement of the company were met with strong resistance by Okocha and his wife.
The petitioner alleged further that since the formation and commencement of the operation of the company, no board and general meeting ever held.
It was also alleged that the respondents are at the verge of selling off one of the business company called Club 10.

Sack of Ministers: Jonathan has right to hire and fire – Activist

A human rights activist based in Onitsha, Anambra State, Comrade Emeka Umeagbalasi has said that the sacking of nine ministers by President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday, was within his powers.
Umeagbalasi, who is the Chairman board of Trustees of International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law said Nigerians should concern themselves with the motive for the sack to know if it was done out of witch-hunt.
He said Nigerians should not dwell on the basis of the action as the ministers had no tenure of office and could be sacked any day.
According to Umeagbalasi, “It is within the rights of the president to appoint ministers, and in doing so, he must also appoint the ones that have integrity and would be able to carry out the job assigned them.
“The sacking is not a problem; it can only be a case if the ministers are competent but sacked as a witch-hunt at the detriment of Nigerians.
“Take for instance the case of the minister of education, she has not done anything remarkable in the sector to improve primary and secondary education, so why will the president not sack that kind of person. Foreign affairs minister is another case, he has not done much to propagate the foreign policies of the country. The killing of our people overseas, the Boko Haram killings and the Syrian crisis, what has he done?
“These are things that are within the domain of the minister to speak up, to even go a step further by looking for a way to get the International Court of Justice to try these terrorists and jail them to make it serve as a deterrent to others. So if you look at the nine ministers removed, you will see that they have not really performed”.
Umeagbalasi said that Nigerians should rather worry about who would be appointed to replace them rather than their removal, even though his organization has severally stood against the over-bloated number of Jonathan’s ministers, believing that his government is better off with the appointment of few but capable hands instead of using ministerial position as a sort of settlement for political jobbers.
He called for meaningful appointments in the reconstitution of the president’s cabinet

Apple unveils 64-bit iPhone 5S with fingerprint scanner, $199 for 16GB

Apple unveils 64-bit iPhone 5S with fingerprint scanner, $199 for 16GB

As expected, Apple has taken the wraps off of its latest flagship smartphone at its Cupertino media event today. The new iPhone 5S is an upgrade in the vein of the previous iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4S—it is outwardly similar to last year’s iPhone 5, but it includes a few key upgrades to keep the design going for another year. The 5S still has a four-inch 1136×640 display and a Lightning connector, and it retains the iPhone 5′s taller and slimmer profile relative to older models like the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. However, it includes a new 64-bit “desktop-class” system-on-a-chip (SoC) dubbed the A7 that boosts CPU and GPU performance over the A6 in the iPhone 5. The chip has twice the general-purpose and floating point registers of its predecessor and is up to twice as fast at performing CPU tasks. The phone supports OpenGL ES 3.0, and Apple claims that the graphics performance in the 5S is 56 times better than in the original iPhone released six years ago. The iPhone 5S…

Cossy Orjiakor is not known for any other thing other than indecent dressing which exposes her God-given 'natural 'things'. To many, she is not a fantastic actress, singer or dancer as she claims to be.

Last week Friday, the controversial star, who graciously flaunts her God-given 'natural endowment' at will, was at the Startimes/Vchannel event, where she was hosted.

It was an event meant to mark the third year anniversary of the company in Nigeria and also to celebrate the entertainment industry in Nigeria. The show took place at Troy Lounge in Ogba, Lagos and it was well attended by many.

But Cossy caused a stir as many watched helplessly when she arrived the venue. Her dress widely opened many mouths which could not close. Guys, as well as ladies, feasted their eyes on her 'things', which popped out of her tight cloth. Her dress was revealing as usual. Many could not help but wonder why Cossy won't change.

Beauty and the bleach in deadly romance

You dey bleach O, you dey bleach, yellow fever. You dey bleach O, you dey bleach, yellow fever…” This was the way the late Afrobeat maestro, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti expressed his own reservation about African women, particularly Nigerian women, who indulge in the controversial habit of skin bleaching.Fanta face, Coca-Cola body”, is one derogatory expression often used to describe the habitual skin bleaching individual.  Today, maintaining lighter skin tone has more or less become the norm for the average Nigerian woman. From Lagos to Maiduguri and Sokoto to Port Harcourt, the story is the same.
There are so many instances of popular and respected women (and men too) from all walks of life who indulge in the habit of bleaching their skin in order to get a fair complexion. The incontrovertible fact is that in Nigeria, people use skin bleach products  a lot.
Recently, the World Health Organisation, WHO, declared that 77 percent of women in Nigeria use skin-lightening products – the world’s highest percentage. It was a daunting report. But it may not be a surprising outcome considering that the quest for fair skin is an obsession within the black race that dates far back in time just as the history of society placing a high premium on lighter skin tone is as old as the hills.
It is not uncommon for a man to brag about his wife’s beautiful fair complexion or for a woman to make claims of being “beautiful” based on her light-coloured skin. Almost communally, there seems to be an unwritten agreement that a woman with lighter skin is the epitome of beauty. At times like this when there is something captivating, arousing and exotic about being fair skinned, the expression “black beauty” seems almost inappropriate and obsolete.
Worried by the heightening dangers and abuse of skin lighteners in Africa, a task team on the Prevention and Education on Skin Lightening Abuse in Africa, recently called for sustained public advocacy programmes on the dangers of using skin-bleaching cosmetics. Rising from the 4th African Ethnic Skin and Hair in Nairobi, Kenya, the team tasked  African government agents to take appropriate steps to restrict access to bleaching products containing harmful components such as hydroquinone, mercury, phenol, resorcinol, and all forms of corticosteroids.
In a statement, a member of the team, Dr. Frances Ajose of the Dermatology Department, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, Lagos,  described skin bleaching as a major challenge to all dermatologists in Africa and deserves urgent political action due to the devastating consequences of skin cancer, ochronosis, fungal infections, acne, and striae.
Governments were urged to implement strict measures to remove all known skin-bleaching cosmetics from over-the-counter shelves in addition to educating the youth about the dangers of skin lighteners while heavy penalties were recommended to be imposed on companies that continue to manufacture the implicated products and advertorials promising fair skin as a symbol of beauty and use of fair-skinned models to promote cosmetics that target the black market  should be restricted or at least discouraged. On July 4, 2013, Kanebo
Cosmetics Inc., the Japanese cosmetics colossus and one of Asia’s largest manufacturers of skin lightening products, announced a massive recall of its products that were designed to lighten skin tone but, instead, caused a blotchy complexion.
Concern about this incident becomes paramount when it is considered that the bulk of skin bleaching creams on sale in Nigeria are smuggled into the country from Asia. Yet regulatory agencies tasked with regulation and controls of these products appear helpless to redress the situation.
At open stalls in Ikeja, Oshodi,  Ojuelegba, Yaba, Idumota and Obalende all in Lagos, the market for bleaching creams booms. Popular skin toning products such as Top Gel, Skin Clear, Skin Light, Skin White, Crusader, Tura, etc., are selling like hot cakes. Even lesser known but cheaper brands are up for grabs. Unlike Caucasians and other Westerners who have an affinity for tanned skin, Nigerian women, and to a much lesser extent, men, are perpetually on the hunt for the best skin bleaching products. Indeed, the quest for a milky while complexion is an obsession.
Why do people bleach their skin? VF went to town to seek random responses from people on the streets of Lagos. Responses varied; however, what stood out was the perception that almost every person that bleaches the skin does so because they want to look attractive and well-groomed.  Blessing, an unmarried 27-year-old banker, uses skin toning creams to give her skin a lighter tone and brighter complexion. “Life is about choices and I have chosen to become light skinned. My complexion is what you can describe as middle-tone, not really dark and not really light, but I do not mind being light-skinned, not because it is better, but as a matter of choice,” she argued.
Kemi, a 41-year-old mother of three, has been using one particular brand of skin bleaching product for over a decade.  “I don’t know about others, but I’m naturally fair-skinned as you can see, I only use the creams once or twice a week to remove unsightly skin discolourations such as age spots, melasma, and things like that from my face, arms and legs. That is not bleaching is it? I do not bleach, please,” she noted with a laugh.
Feyi who suffered acne problem as a teenager feels justified. The acne left her face full of small brown spots which she hates with a passion. The saving  grace is a skin toning product that hides the blemishes by making them lighter. Now she feels a lot more comfortable among others. Toyin was planning to get married when she began “toning” her skin. “In the world of matrimony, there are demands. I did not have any particular skin issue, but I desired a smooth and good complexion. I needed to look my best. Any girl looking out for a bridegroom wants to be attractive. A good skin toning cream gave me what I wanted, so what’s the big deal?”
Vera’s story is no different. Even as a middle-aged mother of three who works hard for a living, her dream is to remain desirable as a mother and wife, and yet be as eye-catching as she can get on the professional front. Vera bleaches her skin, and has no problem with the result. Her excuse for this indulgence is that it effectively hides the tell-tale wrinkles and fine lines of ageing.
However, the reality is that relatively safe skin bleaching agents are hard to come by. Dermatologists say using a skin bleaching treatment or cream makes the skin much more sensitive to the sun and sun exposure, raising the risk of skin cancers and other adverse reactions. While most skin bleaching agents can effectively reduce the appearance of all types of skin discolorations, not all skin bleaching or skin toning creams are the same.

Fear of imminent flood grips Bayelsa communities

Yenagoa — Fears that flood may again ravage the riverine communities in Bayelsa State have heightened as the rivers in the state have started rising.
The development is now causing anxiety among the locals in flood prone communities.
Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NIMET, had early in the year warned coastal states of the South-South to brace up for another devastating flood.
Though flood has been an annual occurrence in Bayelsa State, subjecting the people to extreme poverty and developmental challenges, it was never considered a problem until it devastated several communities across the country last year.
The anxiety of the people is understandable as the state is the receptacle of the country’s water flow and virtually every community in the state is located by rivers, creeks and canals, making them vulnerable to flooding and land- slide.
Our correspondent who went round the riverine communities in Sagbama, Kolokuma-Opokuma and Yenagoa Local Government Areas, noticed the rapid rise in the river level after the recent August break.
Most of the farmlands on the river banks had been taken over by water, forcing the rural folks to harvest their produce early.
Also, most residents have started erecting sand bags around their rivers to prevent the surging water from overflowing the banks and sacking their homes.
Some of the locals who spoke to Vanguard expressed concern over the rising water levels.
“The speed at which the water level is rising is causing us sleepless nights, given the devastating nature of last year’s flooding. Our prayer is that we do not have a repeat of that incident,” a concerned native of Sagbama town, who identified himself as Adowei, said.
But Chairman of Bayelsa State Post Flood Management Committee, Chief Francis Doukpola, has assured that the state government was working around the clock to prevent a repeat of last year’s flooding, which caught many napping.
He said: “The committee is paying attention to flood mitigation as we believe that preventing flooding of communities is far better than managing emergencies in submerged communities.”

6 killed, villages razed in A-Ibom

UYO — No fewer than six persons have been killed, while some villages in Effiat, namely: Inua Abasi, Mbe Ndoro, Ibuot Uton, Utan Brama, and Utan Effiong in Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, were sacked by irate youths.
The youths set homes on fire during a protest over lack of basic amenities and non-payment of compensation by the oil companies operating in the areas.
It was gathered that the crisis started last week but escalated yesterday.
Thousands of the fleeing villagers are currently taking refuge at Ibaka beach with household items rescued from the inferno.
The rampaging youths also accused two prominent sons of the area of depriving them of their entitlements and diverting to their private pockets, monies paid by the oil companies for the development of the communities.
Speaking with Vanguard on phone, one of the youth leaders of Mbo Youth Forum, who declined to give his name, said that they were disappointed by the greed of their prominent brothers, who have turned round to betray the communities.
He said: “Six people died as a result of this denial and deprivation only last week, and no one knows how many lives would have been lost today (yesterday).
“We had written to the Presidency, the state government, the police and the other security formations of the gross misconduct of those two individuals, but there has been no response.
“We fought with the oil companies and they agreed to be paying compensation, which they have not been paying to us as  host communities, but the two persons involved connived with the companies and collect a monthly compensation of over N32 million, which they continue to share.”
The youths alleged that a gubernatorial aspirant, who is running a community surveillance contract with the oil companies and a certain chief in the area, colluded to deprive the communities of their due.
Trouble, it was learnt, started when two surveillance boats belonging to the two prominent sons working for the oil companies were seized by the youths, after efforts to get the two to release the monies as agreed failed.
Mr. Etim Etim Etisong, a victim, who narrated his ordeal to Vanguard, said: “I have lost my medicine and provision shop and my 15 rooms bungalow apartment. How and where do I start from?”

12-year-old girl commits suicide in Bayelsa

Yenagoa — A 12-year-old girl, Monday, allegedly committed suicide in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, the police told the News Agency of Nigeria, yesterday.
Mr Alex Akhigbe, Bayelsa Police Public Relations Officer, told NAN that the girl allegedly hanged herself early on Monday.
He said: “Yes, police have confirmed the death of the young girl, who killed herself behind her father’s house early in the morning, yesterday (Monday).
“The police have also evacuated the corpse from the scene and deposited it in the mortuary. The corpse is still awaiting autopsy.
“It was a very strange act and a surprise to see a young girl of that age take her life; it is a real mystery.”
He, however, said that investigations were ongoing in the matter to establish the motive behind the girl’s alleged action.
“Her parents have not talked to the police. We are still investigating to get to the root of the matter,” he said.
“Parents should always keep a watch over their children. They should know the character and kind of friends their kids keep.”
“This is not good to our society. What could cause a young person of that age to hang herself to death?; we should improve on moral teaching of our children,” Akhigbe said.
The World Health Organisation, WHO, and International Association for Prevention of Suicide  set aside Sept. 10 to raise global attention on the prevention of suicide.
WHO estimates that the number of people who die by suicide is expected to reach 1.5 million per year by 2020.
A WHO, estimate in 2011 showed that one million people die per year by suicide representing “a death every 40 seconds or about 3,000 every day.”
