ASUU strike: Don’t open the University – Lecturers warn VC

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA) Chapter in Ondo State today warned their Vice-Chancellor not to reopen the University until the federal government finally agrees to resolve the ongoing face-off with ASUU national body.
The latest warning from the University lecturers contradicts the statement made by the Vice Chancellor in Akure, the Ondo State capital yesterday that he was already talking with the striking workers of the institution on the need to reopen the school by the end of this month.
The Union, however urged Prof. Mimiko to follow due process in obedience to the rule of law and refrain from desperate act of self-help in his attempt to re-open the University for academic activities.
In a statement issued by their Counsel, Barrister Charles Titiloye, the Union noted with great concern the threat by the Vice-Chancellor to re-open the University for academic activities despite the fact that the only registered academic industrial Union in the University is on strike.
The Union warned that it would not allow contract adjunct lecturers or newly employed graduate fellows be used to resume teaching in the school when the contractual employment of its members have not been terminated.
They said such unregistered academic industrial Union will not be allowed to operate or work at AAUA.
The Lecturers noted that while the doors of industrial Court was open, it will amount to taking the law into his hand for the Vice- Chancellor to disregard due process and engage new academia for the operation of the University.
The union said Mimiko should be held responsible for any breach of peace in the University resulting from his unlawful steps.
They advised parents to pray for an immediate end to the strike and not to allow the authorities of Adekunle Ajasin University use their children to ferment trouble on campus.
